CALABAR: Suspected criminal burnt to death by angry mob

A suspected criminal was on Wednesday lynched and burnt to death by angry mob at Edim Otop, a suburb in Calabar, Cross River State capital.
The incident occurred some metres away from where another was burnt on Sunday.
The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in the State Irene Igbo, had in a reaction to the Sunday incident said that four persons were arrested and that investigations were on going.
“We are on top of the situation. Four suspects have been arrested and investigations are ongoing.
“Immediately it is concluded, we shall charge them to court”, she had told our correspondent.
However, two days after, a repeat of the incident occurred.
When our correspondent got to the scene, fire was still burning the battered body. There was no security operative around.

The incident occurred in an area where offices of most of the security agencies are situated. These agencies include Immigration, Air Force and the Police‎.
It was however, alleged that the deceased was a hardened criminal, as some of people were seen jubilating over his death.
Effort to get the name of the suspect was unsuccessful but our source alleged that he was fond of stealing car battery and other valuables in the area.
The PPRO she said was not aware and promised to confirm and get to us. But as of the time of filling this report, she was yet to give reaction to the situation.
