China to ban petrol, diesel vehicles

World’s biggest car market, China has concluded plans to ban the production and sale of diesel and petrol vehicles. This has further threatened the future profitability of oil, which is Nigeria’s major revenue source. The development is coming two months after the UK, like Germany, France, India, Norway and Netherlands, announced plans to take out fuel-run cars, as part of efforts to reduce air pollution. The ban will lead to a reduction of oil demand in China, as the country is currently the world’s second-largest oil consumer after the US. Xin Guobin, China’s vice industry minister, said it had started “relevant research” but that it had not yet decided when the ban would come into force, BBC reports. “Those measures will certainly bring profound changes for our car industry’s development,” Guobin told Xinhua, China’s official news agency. Music star Don Williams dies

Country music star and Hall of Fame member, Don Williams, has passed away at the age of 78. Williams reportedly died after a short illness. The Tulsa Time singer played his final tour in 2006 and in 2010 was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame. In 1991, every single he released hit the Top 40 Billboard County charts. He returned to the spotlight in 2012 with a new album, And So It Goes, and in 2014 with Reflections, which included contributions from stars Keith Urban, Vince Gill and Alison Krauss. American singer-songwriter, Shooter Jennings took to Twitter, after news of Don’s death broke to pay tribute. He wrote: “Sad about Don Williams but Troy Gentry was my friend. I had great times with him. I’m stunned, angry and upset at the moment. I’ll miss you.” Country music star Travis Tritt also paid tribute. “So sad to hear that “Gentle Giant” Don Williams has died! What an incredible legacy of great music he leaves behind. May he RIP,” he tweeted.

ASUU strike: What Vice Chancellors discussed

The Committee of Vice-Chancellors (VC) of Nigerian Universities yesterday met in Abuja over the ongoing strike by members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU). Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University of Technology, Minna, Niger State, Professor Muftau Akanji, said the meeting deliberated on the sutuation and made recommendations to the federal government on the way forward. “We asked that a middle way should be found into resolving the crisis”, he told Thisday. Akanji described the strike as “very unfortunate”. “It has come at a time many universities are trying to stabilise their academic calendar. “For us in the FUT, everything would have been normal this year”. Akanji pleaded with both the federal government and ASUU to settle their differences in the interest of the education sector, parents and students. UNIVERSITY CAMPUS FLOODED BY RAIN IN CALABAR

  Sources have confirmed that the hostel accommodations were flooded by rain in the cross river university of calabar cross river state. The rain which started at about 3:30pm and lasted for more than two hours brought down heavy down pours and thunder storms which also caused the over flooding of a drainage close to the university sporting centre and expanded towards the girls hostel before covering the entire staff quarters of the university. Reports from students confirmed that the flooding was caused by a drainage that was filled with dirt which couldn't allow the easy flow of water. BBC has criticised President Muhammadu Buhari for “an apparent lack of faith in the health systems at home”. ASUU Declares Indefinite Strike From 14th August 2017 Following the outcome of the referendum meeting held Sunday afternoon in Abuja by the union leaders, the Academic staff Union of Universities has declared an indefinite strike from Monday 14th August 2017. This the Union leader says is to persuade the Federal government to meet their demands. This came after several branches of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) have voted overwhelmingly for members in both federal and state universities to embark on an indefinite strike to press home the implementation of their demands. Suspected Robber buried alive in Ebonyi

Angry youths in Afikpo North Local Government Area of Ebonyi State have reportedly buried alive a suspected armed robber identified as Chukwudi Omaka. Omaka along with his gang members had allegedly robbed and killed a businessman, known as Idam Ogbonnia.Ogbonnia was reportedly killed at Amaisri community in the area. The US Police have rescued a man named Jose Duran whose two hands were nailed to a tree in the forest area of Albuquerque, New Mexico. According to Breitbart News website, a city worker (who preferred not be named) discovered Duran with both hands nailed to a tree and screaming for help“He kept yelling, ‘Help. The police at Idimu Division led by the Divisional Police Officer, SP Fayomi Solomon early on Wednesday foiled a robbery operation that took place at Zenith Bank Plc branch at Egbeda, Lagos. During the operation, one of the robbers died as a result of injury he sustain in a gun battle with the Police while the second suspect was arrested alive. OYO STATE: Fire destroys goods worth millions in Ibadan

An early morning fire, on Sunday engulfed offices and warehouses destroying property worth N500m in Oyo State. According to reports, the fire was caused by an electric spark from an unidentified store in a storey building around 2.00 am 32 out of 72 shops containing Agricultural produce, chemicals, provisions, mobile phones accessories, building materials and a plywoods on the ground floor were completely burnt. A security guard, and neighbors living around the area, noticed heavy smoke from the roof of the building, but efforts to put it out the fire were abortive, as the fire increased. The response from the fire service was not swift  when they were contacted.  However, secretary to the Oyo State Government, Olalekan Alli and Special Adviser to Governor Abiola Ajimobi on security matters, Segun Bolarinwa, visited the scene, Sunday afternoon to confirm the incident and the level of destruction. 

CROSS RIVER: Warring communities’ in Cross River sign peace pact

Two warring communities of Ababene and Iyamitet in Obubra local government area have signed a peace pact.Speaking at the occasion which was held at the boundary between the traditional clans of both communities, the people unanimously agreed that never again would they carry arms against each other. The chairman of the peace and Reconciliation committee, Hon Ernest Irek expressed delight that peace has returned to the communities after several months of war. According to him, with the signing of the peace accord, both communities will continue to live like brothers and sisters like it has always been. Nollywood: Odunlade Adekola, Mr Latin attacked

Popular Yoruba actors, Bolaji Amusan, popularly known as Mr Latin and Odunlade Adekola, were on Saturday attacked by armed robbers, Premium Times reports. According to Mr Latin, they were returning from a Glo Music show when they ran into the robbers on Sagamu road. “We left Ijebu-Ode after the show and heading to Abeokuta, when at about 7.30 p.m. we ran into the armed robbers already stationed themselves on the road,” he said. Latin said everyone abandoned the vehicles and fled into the bush, where they stayed for two hours. The thieves ransacked their vehicles and carted away valuables including money and mobile phones. “We took to our heels as the robbers pursued us with guns. We were in the bush for about two hours, before we later regained freedom after the robbers left the scene,” Mr Latin explained. Biglia won four Belgian titles with Anderlecht before moving to Lazio in 2013. Qatar crisis: UAE denies hacking news agency

The Washington Post cited  US intelligence officials as saying the UAE had orchestrated the posting of incendiary quotes attributed to Qatar's emir that he insisted were fabricated. The incident helped spark a diplomatic rift between Qatar and its neighbours. Qatar said the report "unequivocally proves that this hacking crime took place". However, UAE Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Anwar Gargash told the BBC on Monday the Post's report was "untrue". He also reiterated that the UAE and five other Arab nations had not written to Fifa to demand that Qatar be stripped of the right to host the 2022 World Cup. MAIDUGURI: Female suicide bomber kills 10 in mosque

A female suicide bomber struck early Monday morning, killing 10 worshippers who came for prayers at a mosque in Maiduguri, Borno State. The incident came on day after Borno State Police command said two boys, aged 8 and 10, came in contact with Boko Haram terrorists who strapped one of them with IED. The bomb later exploded killing Gambo Bukar, while his friend, Umar Bukar sustained injuries and was hospitalized.
